Distracted driving is one of the biggest causes of car accidents today. Every day 9 people are killed and 1,153 people are injured because of distracted driving related incidence
(“Distracted Driving”). The people in these crashes never expected it to be them, but if someone is texting and driving they will learn how fatal distracted driving can be to them and those around them. Florida has a statute stating that texting while driving is prohibited while in the state of Florida. Although this statute still stands, many people, especially teenagers, choose to ignore it. Because of this, innocent pedestrians and other drivers are killed and injured every day.

State Statute 316.305 both outlaw the use of cell phones while driving (“Distracted Driving”).
These efforts were made in the hope that people would quit distracted driving. Although these efforts were made for the good of the people, they have not reduced the number of crashes caused by distracted driving. Cars are now being made with hands-free texting and calling, which allows the driver to text, call, email, and do other things available on a cell phone, only allowing the driver to keep both hands and eyes on the wheel and the road around them. The distracted driver is not the only one at risk when on the road. Other drivers, as well as pedestrians, can also be injured when a driver takes their eyes off of the road, even for just a few seconds. The new technology within the cars will help prevent distracted driving accidents from happening.
While there may be laws that prohibit texting while driving, there is little that Florida officials can do to reinforce those laws (Beninate, Cole). In 2014, 431,000 peoples were injured and 3,179 people were killed in car crashes due to distracted drivers. Florida’s Senate Bill
