Texting while driving is distracted driving which causes numerous accidents every year and should be illegal. Texting while driving has also been compared to being just as bad as driving while intoxicated. Because of this, it has become illegal in many states and individual cities with citations being issued as a result of being caught. In the last ten years the amount of cell phone users has increased exponentially. Due to this, cell phones are everywhere now and is also the reason for the increase in texting and texting while driving. During 2008, more than 2.5 trillion text messages were sent worldwide (Tilley, 40). Texting has become a part of everyday life whether it be for work or personal use. That being said, texting while driving has become a big part of everyday life for many people also. Twelve percent of all fatality crashes that involve a distracted driver are due to cell phone use (Sherin, Lowe and Harvey, 681). The first thing that needs to be done is getting the word out by word of mouth, doing a self assessment, and not being afraid to say something when someone else is texting and driving. These are the biggest factors. The self assessment is basically just putting the phone down. No text is worth putting a person’s life at risk. Also, having the courage to tell someone else to put the phone down is very difficult to do but is a necessity to cut down on this issue. The next thing that can be done is making texting while driving illegal nation wide. This will not completely stop it but allowing fines to be issued would help a little bit. Nothing will ever completely stop, whether it is illegal or not, but making texting while driving illegal will keep the honest people
