“All of our exalted technological progress, civilization for that matter, is comparable to an ax in the hand of a pathological criminal.” These were the words of the renowned physicist and genius, Albert Einstein. He describes the dangers of technology grimly; by comparing humanity’s advancement in electronics to handing a weapon to the hands of a pathological criminal. This hazardous, fatal weapon, which goes by the name of technological advancement, has caused profuse amounts of trouble over the course of decades. Technology’s ability to distract is one big problem related directly to driving accidents. One quote by Christian Louis Lange states that technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master. Furthermore, statistics show the number of accidents caused by texting while driving is six times more than the amount caused by drinking and driving (Texting and Driving Accident Statistics). This shows ostensibly how perilous the act of texting and driving by comparing it to drunk driving, which is infamous for its dangerousness. According to another study, texting takes off the driver’s eyes the road for 4.6 seconds, which is basically traveling a whole football field blindfolded at 55 miles per hour (Distracted Driving Fact Sheet). This gives drivers a graphic explanation of what kind of risk they are taking when they look down at their cell phones to read the text. In addition, certain technology gives drivers a false sense of safety. According to a study led by Murtuza Jadliwala, assistant professor of computer science at The University of Texas, drivers were more likely to use wearable devices while driving as they realized that using the easy access to wearable devices made it more efficient than trying to text or call on their smartphone while driving (New Study Shows Wearable Technology Also Contributes to Distracted Driving). This means that although the wearable devices were less distracting than cell phones, this led to drivers using it more often and canceled out the safety difference between cell phones and wearable devices.
