In the book Crazy, you have a determined father, wanting to help his son. He did what he thought he was supposed to do, diagnose them, drug them, and then everything would be okay. Pete, the father noticed his Son Mike had been acting very different during his senior year of college. Eventually he was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Pete took his son to see doctors and was turned away because his son wasn’t a threat. Fortunately they were given medication for his symptoms, but Mike decided he did not want to take it. Mike ended up in jail because he had done something to his neighbor’s house and charges had been pressed, despite Mike’s disorder. However there are people, who absolutely do not want to take medication to help with their treatment. When being diagnosed, the doctor will inform the patient of their options of treatment. The treatment almost always requires some form of medication. This is because the medication is able to stop thoughts, help the body do what it supposed to do, and sometimes stop cravings. Doctors will inform patients what the medication will do and what the benefits and side effects are. Doctors do this, so patients know what they may be getting in to, what they should look out for, and what to expect. In an article titled Medications Play a Key Role in Treatment, obtained from the Behavioral Health Evolution website, it is stated that “In order to get the most out of medication, patients must make an informed choice about taking medications, and understand the potential benefits and costs associated with medication use. In addition, they must take the medication as prescribed by a mental health professional,” (Treatment). There are also many different types of medication for the same diagnosis. Sometimes it takes trial and error to find the right prescription for patients. Most do not like to be reliant on medication. Sometimes most people do not like a medication doing the job and want themselves to fix it. I personally think taking a medication is a step to the right direction.
