In small towns across the United States, it is common to hear of many underage parties being busted and mass amounts of students receiving citations. This has been normalized by popular T.V. shows and movies and many might not think anything of it. However, in high school, students should not be getting caught every weekend for being at a party. These students should be doing things like going shopping, making McDonald’s trips, and hanging out with friends on the weekends without being wreckless. Underage drinking should be more of a talked about issue.
Underage drinking is illegal and should not be happening as often as it is. If a minor has been caught drinking while under the age of 18, they will receive an M.I.P. An M.I.P is also known as a Minor in Possession and high school students under the age of 18 typically get these. If they are the age of 18 and above (college student age) they will most likely receive a P.A.U.L.A, which stands for Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age. For a first offense M.I.P, it would be a $100 fine. With this fine, the student would also need to take a class about the problems of alcohol. With each M.I.P a minor might acquire, the punishments will get worse, eventually resulting in a $500 fine and the loss of their license.
