Volunteering is an important matter across the globe. It affects so many people from every corner of the world. Nowhere is there a shortage of opportunities that allow someone to use their talents to benefit someone or something else. There will always be people in need and causes to stand behind. However, there are more reasons than these that will cause someone to be motivated to volunteer. People will choose to volunteer for many ways, whether it be to have the opportunity to help that certain cause they believe in, to enhance or alter their career that needs some form of change, to improve their mental health, or for the social benefits it creates for them in their community. The author of “Differential Benefits of Volunteering Across the Life Course” writes, “In other words, the extent to which individuals feel they control the outcomes of their lives, believe they are part of a supportive community, find their daily work rewarding, have a sense of purpose to their lives, and expect that rewards can be achieved through socially normative means affects their psychological well-being” (Marieke). This was written about a study concerning the relationship between volunteering and the mental health of citizens. The conclusion was that it is logical to infer that through volunteering the patient is given the sense of purpose and accomplishment which improves self-esteem. Someone looking to find a better perspective on life and lift their self-esteem can choose to volunteer in the areas where they can most effectively do so. The fact that, through helping others, citizens are able to improve their own way of like is a seemingly obvious reason why someone would choose to volunteer.
