Madison MacArthur 12/18/14 English 3 Pre-AP Persuasive Essay: The Effects of Extracurricular Activities In high school, there is a sense if freedom not felt in grade school. There are choices to be made on which classes tI take, or which to avoid. However, there are also the choices of extracurriculars. These may range from an ethics club to student government, but all are attainable by the student. Extracurriculars are a positive way for students to meet new people, experience new situations and get involved at school. However, with these positive effects also come negative ones. High schoolers are placed under pressure to join more and more extracurriculars by parents, teachers, friends and even themselves. This stress has a negative effect on the students health, how they treat the activities, and on their personal relationships as well. However, there is a risk if a student begins join multiple groups. A high schooler needs to know where to draw the line between what they want to do, and what their teachers, parents, and friends want them to do. While it is wonderful to be involved at their school, teenagers need to know that it is not worth risking their personal health, relationships, or even the sacrifice of joining for the sake of joining. Those that disregard their personal health, for sports or due to being stretched thin need to take a look at their schedules and decide on what they need to change so that they are cared for as well. Teens need to remember that they join for themselves, to get involved in their own personal passions, not to satisfy adults and friends. The most important factor when students get involved should be on what they are getting out of joining, not on what they are sacrificing to
