There is a public stigma towards people who are registered on the sex offenders list. The public view of the individuals on this list as a creepy old pervert who drives a windowless van , prays on women and children. If they are caught and released they will continue to reek havoc on the neighborhood they live in. However, this is not the case only 14 percent of sex offenders commit another sex crime after they serve time and are normally known by the victims. This does not excuse their crimes by any means but it is important to know what crimes are on actually the registry. Once an individual is on this registry, it is incredibly hard to get a job and can make their life incredibly difficult. This is good if the person actually sexually assaulted or harassed an individual. However, this punishment does not suit someone who urinated in public. Though it is rude and disgusting to relieve yourself in public , does that person along on the same list as someone who molested kids? Or if a 16 year old couple get intimate and the girls parents find out and press charges does the boyfriend deserves to have his life ruined we're having consensual sex with his then girlfriend? The "Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act" had the most noble intentions when it was passed in 2006 , it wanted to assure the safety of the nations children. Knowing the location of all people who have committed a sex crime can put a lot of families at easy but the statistics show that the majority of people who commit the crimes are not registered. The definition of a sex crime should not be as wide, having it as broad as it is makes it harder to distinguish a real threat to women and children from a individual who is not dangerous at
