Imagine waking up and walking into the living room finding your mother lying on the floor. You walk up to her to see that there is dry blood crusted around her nose and a massive bruise that has already formed around her eye that is going to take a lot of makeup to cover up. You shake her to make sure she is still alive and at the little sigh she makes, a breath of relief comes out of your mouth. You whisper in her ear to get up off the floor and take her to her room before your younger and brothers and sister wake up to see her in this bad condition. There is no sign of your stepfather around but your pounding heart knows he will be home at any moment.
In my world, domestic violence is not a joking matter. According to clarkprosecutor.org, every 15 seconds, a woman is beaten by her husband or partner in the United States. Domestic violence is not only being a abused physically but also verbally or feeling that you could be physically abused. My stepfather would constantly yell inappropriate sayings in front of us and my mother would yell back. When alcohol was involved, I knew it wasn’t a safe night for my family in our house. I was the protector for my brothers and sister and with nothing else in my mind, I would put my life at risk and throw myself in between the arguments my mother and stepfather would have. I would place myself in the middle of them while they were yelling back and forth at each other and have to separate them so they couldn’t hurt each other. When they would lock themselves in a room of some sort, I would stand outside the door and bang on it until one of them came out. My goal was to protect my family at all cost, even if I was the one that would have to pay for
