In my opinion effective philanthropy is not a linear concept, it’s much like an interwoven design with many complexities. Yet I can say every philanthropic approach differs with the need they are trying to meet. As mentioned by Sean stannnard-Stockton effective philanthropy is a mixture of strategic philanthropy, charitable giving, and philanthropic investments where their qualitative characteristics works well together.Still it’s apparent that effective philanthropy cannot be contained in square box directed by social views. When it comes to effective philanthropy I must resonate with Peter Singer and his idea of seeing the bigger picture, where the heart and mind must coincide. While her approach might seem lavish and a bit extreme, it can also be quite effective, where she is able to show a bunch of girls that you don’t have to let the circumstances of today determine your tomorrow. Where the lavish school represent the product of making something out of nothing as well as the value of education. In creating this project Oprah is able to reach these girls by targeting their desperate need to escape their situations. While this approach is unconventional, it ignites a fire that is controlled by raw ambition to rise above the forceful ties of nothingness. By using education to fuel that fire, Oprah has started a movement that will continue to strive for many years. These girls as portrayed in the case study are products of hardship and having experience such difficulties it’s unlikely that they are left unscathed. By being exposed to such privileges these girls are shown the aspect of what they can attained through hard work and dedication. Statement such as “how do these students now adjust to their communities?” in my opinion is misguided, the goal is not to have them adjust back in to their communities, but to bring about a change to their community through education and the tools they’ve acquired by being a part of Oprah’s project, which in turns will create a new community with less crime, violence, poverty and hunger. While some might argue the chances of these girls returning is unlikely, but at the same time the likelihood of one or two returning might increase as more girls are given the chance to be part of the project. Ethically it’s not okay to take the brightest and best leaders out of their community, but without this opportunity the outcome might be different, these girls potential would have remained untapped. Above all, sometimes it necessary to move away from a situation in order to gain
