I sincerely thank you for your generosity. Your gift enables United Way of the Greater Dayton Area to fund 48 agencies and 100 programs that address the vital needs of those affected by the economic downturn within our community. And because of those continued needs, United Way is committed to seeking collaborative solutions with the for-profit and non-profit community in order to continue our mission of making significant strides
My mother has worked for Children’s Mercy for nine years, and it has been a huge blessing to hear about all of the wonderful things that Children’s Mercy does for our community. As a result of Children’s Mercy being a not for profit hospital, their funding must come from sources outside of their patients. One of the biggest fundraisers that Children’s Mercy conducts is called The Big
This tremendous amount of money went towards concepts such as the Community Action Programs, the food stamp program, and Head Start. The Community Action Program was designed in order to “…encourage the urban poor to organize themselves…,” and this had the power to “redistribute power away from local officials”2. This was highly effective in encouraging individuals to work. Head Start also generated a powerful effect.

This shows he cares for his community. Another example is “Louis Rams Quarterback Kurt Warner's First Things First Foundation teamed up with U-Haul, Habitat for Humanity and Aaron's Inc. to reward a first-time homebuyer with a house filled with $10,000 worth of food, furniture and appliances” (ksdk.com). This shows he is willing to donate and help out those in need. One more example is “Treasure House began as the vision of Kurt and Brenda Warner out of love for their son Zachary — who was unable to receive the kind of care that would enable him to live a more fulfilling and independent life with the resources available to him in Arizona” (treasure house.org).
Virtue, compassion, and benevolence are all qualities in our society that are considered good. In history, there are figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. that have displayed these characteristics, but then again, demonstrations of goodness are shown by people every day. Goodness or righteousness from people has always thrived, even in the worst periods of humanity. Therefore, mankind is inherently good as shown in Elie Wiesel’s novel Night, where this notion is illustrated through kind acts during his difficult times and through charities which give people hope.

Why exactly do they want to help the community? I also learned of the many nonprofit organizations in America are there not for the cash, but the purpose to help the people with their needs. My perception of non-profit organizations has stayed the same, but it has given me a new perspective and actual experience on how these organizations affect people’s lives. Working at Chicago Alliance, I’m working with people who want to help for the better cause of equality and justice. Nonprofits who help the community should be organizations that help for the betterment of the community and for the people in the community who don’t have a voice.
