I am happy to join with you today, as the Senator of the Hoosier state that is Indiana, in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for patriotism in the history of our nation. It is as if that a mere third of a century ago, we were not a nation, we were not united, we ran by tyranny, the British fed on our fear. Not today, now we have a nation, one day we will have a country from sea to sea. And that can be complete if we Americans do one thing. Fight the Mexicans for that land.
David Brooks utilizes the rhetorical devices of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos to build his argument that disrespecting American values is counterproductive. First, Brooks uses the Rhetorical device of Pathos to appeal to the emotions of the reader. He says that “Over the centuries, this civic religion fired a fervent desire for change”(Par. 6). Brooks uses the word “fervent” in his writing, because it appeals to the emotions of the reader, It expresses the extent of the desire for change. This is known as pathos.
QP provided Maunica with a CBT activity geared towards her values. QP explained to Maunica that the purpose of the activity to examine the things that she values , decide what she values and how values affects choices in everyday life, and articulate the things that matter to her and why. QP asked Maunica to list somethings that she values. QP brainstormed with Maunica things that are of important to her. QP discussed with Maunica what values are and provided an example.
Lewis is trying to make the audience feel like they have a mission, one that will take them as a community to accomplish. Lewis purposely first leads them with sadness, telling the audience stories of friends and family who face the hardships of the government, but, starts telling them that they are not alone, telling them that they need to work, and finally, telling them that they will succeed. By doing this, he starts with the truth, but ends by motivating the audience of how it isn’t the end.

The next rhetorical appeals are logos and ethos. Logos deals with persuading the audience through the use of logic and reason. Logos can be stated by using facts, statistics, and evidence to back up your information. Logos was used in this article when President Andrew D White stated, “Some players grew their hair long to provide a modicum of head protection” (Zimmerman 2014). Some studies showed that if their hair was longer it would provide more padding when they would collide with each other.
On October 15th, 2016 Austin Community College’s Department of History and the Diversion of Social and Behavioral Sciences created a history symposium. This symposium consisted of 2 speakers, Theresa Jach and Kemp Dixon, who spoke about convict leasing and the law east of the Pecos. Throughout Theresa’s speech she showed us the similarities between convict leasing and slavery in the early years of American history. She reminds us that while slavery has been abolished, the enslavement of individuals who have been convicted of a crime is still legal and allows the state to have the opportunity to make a profit off of keeping correction facilities full. In Niccolo Machiavelli's book, The Prince (1513), he evaluates on how a prince can be a successful leader. Machiavelli’s purpose of this guidebook was to construct his argument to the rising ruler Giuliano de Medici for when he comes to power in Florence. He adopts a casual but authoritative tone in order to convince the prince that Machiavelli’s evaluation on how to be the best prince, is the right thing for the prince to do without coming off as he knows more than the prince or is trying to intimidate him.. Machiavelli’s reference to previous rulers and whether their tactics failed or succeeded helps to benefit his credibility along with his allusion to historic text. He appeals to our logic by simply stating a prince can only do what is within his power to control, and his use of an analogy furthers his argument.
Tim LaRocca Persepolis KPA In the book “Persepolis”, the author Marjane Satrapi, uses excellent diction to help the reader obtain knowledge and gain understanding of her main purpose in a specific passage or chapter of the book. Despite her specific word choice, it is challenging for readers to truly understand her main purpose only through literary terms and devices used throughout the book. Therefore, to help increase the readers ability to understand the main purpose of a certain specific passage, Satrapi uses an extensive amount of precise graphic elements. For example, in the passage “Kim Wilde”, Satrapi is able to express her main purpose that when governments tend to restrict the people too much, and become oppressive, the people tend to resist their law and rebel against the law by using the graphic elements of shading and facial expressions to express her purposes in and easier and clearer visual way.
John Winthrop was an English Puritan who was a key part in the founding of the first major settlement, the Massachusetts Bay colony. John led himself and groups of English puritans to the new world away from the persecution of the British empire in 1630, during the Puritan Migration. While on their voyage to the new world, Winthrop preached his most famous sermon "A Model of Christian Charity" also known as "City upon a Hill", in an attempt to bond the puritan members and to discuss the influence god has given them, and to set an example of communal charity and unity to the world. Plato’s dialogues Gorgias and Phaedrus both consider the idea of rhetoric. Rhetoric being the art or skill of getting something from the masses or individuals, and often used in getting away with a crime. The type of rhetoric being argued about in the Gorgias dialogue is public rhetoric, what exactly rhetoric is, whether it is an art or not, and how it is best used so as to promote the highest good. In the Phaedrus dialogue private rhetoric is being discussed over the issue of love. This paper will examine how eros is central to both the Gorgias and Phaedrus dialogues.
The Crazy Iliad In life a very good skill to have is to be able to persuade people because it can help out someone in the future of their life situations. This skill is also important when going into war, and persuading people to fight or agree on something someone believes is true. In the Iliad, Homer’s characters’ use persuasion against each other multiple times in the story. The characters in the Iliad mostly use ethos, pathos, and logos when persuading each other to understand what they believe is true.
Often known as the Father of American Literature to many educated individuals, Ralph Waldo Emerson in his oration “The American Scholar” brilliantly provides a sublime example of how Emerson earned his title through the appliance of diction, syntax, allusions, and many other rhetorical devices and strategies. Indicated towards his highly educated audience, the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Emerson introduces the idea that the common class and common concepts of everyday life are becoming the future of art and literature through purpose, credibility, and tone.
