According to Abraham Maslow, every individual wants to get to the peak or apex of his career and the fact that someone is working in a prestigious company does not mean they all are satisfied with their income and status in the company. In our opinion, since everyone wants to get to the ‘self-actualization’ stage in his or her life the person will rather pursue a teaching career which will enable the individual achieve everything easily.
People leave demanding, high-status and financially rewarding careers and switch to teaching. Engineers, practicing medical doctors, veterinary surgeons, solicitors, accountants, psychologists and company executives also leave their well paid jobs and pursue teaching as a career. The Australian colloquialism relates to people adopting the laziest approach possible and choosing what they think will less be easy (Hellen M.G. Watt and Paul W. Richardson, 2012) for them and teaching is one of them. Some have the desire to work with children is regarded as the reason why people take up the teaching profession (Young, 1995). It has been known that it is a way in giving back to society and helping the less privileged and also ensuring social equity (Watt & Richardson, 2007). The Asia Pacific Journal of Teacher Education stated that majority of the populace in Turkey regard teaching as the work for the woman. Also the teaching career is mostly preferred by females in Turkey (Bourne & Ozbilgin, 2008; Kilinc & Mahiroglu, 2009). In Turkey, there is a high rate of economic hardship and much emphasis is placed on one getting a job. Since the individual or citizen in Turkey wants to first fulfil his basic needs as stated by Abraham Maslow’s theory the individual will be motivated to take the teaching profession as a career.
