1. It is evident in today's school systems that the achievement gap, indeed, is an issue. But, do not be discouraged, there is good news. We as teachers have the power to change this and to help all of our students succeed, regardless of any preconceived notions about their low socioeconomic status or racial minorities. First and foremost, all students are capable of learning, each and everyone of them. As teachers, when working with socially and culturally diverse students we must hold them to the same standards as we would any other students. You take a deep breath and say….. “ Okay everybody, I see where all of you are coming from and you all of your concerns are valid. I know that you are looking out for me because you are my family, but this is something I am very passionate about. So you need to hear me out. Teachers are the change! Yes, you are right, all of these negative things are taking place, but that's where I come in. It is my job a teacher to make a difference and change these negatives into positives. Things are not going to get better if I don't take action. If everyone looked at it the same way you all are, everyone would be scared away and would not have the courage to be teachers. The job can seem intimidating with the sad state the education system is in, but that is one of the main reasons I want to be a teacher. I want to make a difference in the education world and in children's lives. Being a teacher is such a difficult, yet rewarding experience. Teachers have the power and the influence to change children's lives. I want to be a mentor to kids who need me. I want to be someone who brings out the best in children and helps them reach their full potential. Over the years I have learned that helping kids is what brings me the most joy. Education provides children with inspiration, guidance and knowledge. Everything I do as a teacher will be will be to help better my students, so inevitably I will be able to make a difference. When it comes to the essentialist philosophy there are definitely some differences in comparison to the old principals progressive philosophy. Now, there is no need to be completely thrown off, because there are still some similarities. It is important to keep in mind that the students are and always will be the main priority no matter the philosophy. Regardless, the philosophy we as teachers still want nothing more than to see our students succeed. That has not and will not change. That being said, the new principle might have a different opinion about how he thinks students will succeed. With the essentialist philosophy there are some differences. There may not be as much wiggle room in regards to creative teaching as there once was, let me explain. With this new philosophy there will be a lot of emphasis on teaching basic knowledge and skills that productive members of society need to know. There will be stricter rules put in place to ensure that students are solely learning the material they “need to know”. I know before we were able to run our classrooms more student centered and individualized, but from now on students will not allowed to do more of their own thing or creatively express their feelings. Lets not forget though, our goal is still to prepare children for the unknown future, for highschool and beyond, just like with our old philosophy. Another difference is, there will be little socialization and free time within the classrooms. Students will be held
