Photographic Styles – Richard Avedon When learning photography, it is important to learn techniques such as how to use a camera, and how to light photos correctly, but it is also important to learn about different famous photographers and their personal styles. Richard Avedon was a famous photographer from 1945 to 2004. His style was very simple, but he what made his photos stand out was the way he captured the personality of his subjects. In this paper the photographer Richard Avedon will be further explored including personal style, how he inspires photographer’s today, evolution of personal style, and how he began his photography career.

After the war was over, the French couture industry was trying to make a comeback and reestablish who they were since it went years without any activity due to the war. With that Avedon decided to get into the fashion industry. With his crisp technique and new creative ways to capture a subject, he quickly gained popularity and became the lead photographer at Harper’s Bazaar. As he continued his career at Harper’s Bazaar, Avedon also wanted to capture more than just fashion photography. In 1946, James Baldwin and Avedon started working on a project for Life magazines called “Doorways.” During the project, Avedon stop the project because he felt he was exploitative Harlem. In the 1950’s he continues to work with Harper’s Bazaar and capturing portraits of famous people around the world like Marylin Monroe. In the 1960’s through the 1980’s his focus was on social injustice. During this time frame the biggest issue was protesting the Vietnam war. Even though Avedon always tried to get into documentary photography, he always seems to come back to fashion photography and portrait photography.
