The Trine University Master of Physician Assistant Program Mission and Vision statements resonate with my previous educational background, my current professional objectives, and the ambitions I have for my future vocation. While attending my alma mater, Bluffton University, and working for my current employer, Blanchard Valley Health System, I have learned the importance of maintaining balance. Every task, situation, or person in unique and requires an individualized approach. Over the last five years I have lived, worked, and studied in communities that challenged me to be curious yet careful, confident yet collaborative, and cost-effective yet compassionate. While attending Bluffton University, I was fortunate enough to travel to Bangladesh for a month on a cross-cultural experience. To prepare, our group spent the semester prior learning all about the customs, religion, politics, cuisine, and culture into which we would be immersed. There I witnessed the dieticians striking a balance between being confident in their contributions while being open to cooperation. Women coming to WIC were sometimes not only dealing with food insecurity. They might share with the dietician about their struggle with a lack of housing, income or transportation. With the rising opioid epidemic, they were also facing drug addictions themselves or with those closest to them. When WIC staff members were not equipped to support their clients, they turned to their network of non-profit organizations and support groups. The medical field is most effective when it operates in the same way. When every healthcare professional is confident in their abilities, yet knowledgeable of the roles of other specialists and services, their interprofessional collaborative practice is optimized for the best patient care
