“People are naturally conflicted and unsure what to do and today’s reaction and decision may not be next week’s conclusion”(Freundel 5). Physician assisted suicide (PAS) also know as “Death with Dignity” has become a big controversy around the world and between religions. People want to be in control of how and when their lives will end. They don't want to lay there suffering if they can end their lives painlessly. Physician assisted suicide is when a terminally ill patient wants to end their life, and asks a doctor to prescribe a medication to do so. The doctor can not actually give the patient the prescription since that would be considered euthanasia. The patient must take the pill on his own. As religious Jews, we believe that killing someone or assisting someone in killing themselves is the same thing as murder, which is a sin. In the bible, one of the ten command states “Thou shalt not kill.” If God is telling you that one may not take someone's life or your own, how can one go ahead and do so? If a patient ask his doctor, who is Jewish, if he can help the patient kill himself, the doctor must refer him to a different doctor, since he is forbidden to kill someone. “One cannot kill another. It does not matter whether the other person is comatose, mentally deranged, physically handicapped or terminally ill”(Resnicoff 5).Rabbi Michael Cahana states “life is valuable even if the person doesn't believe it. Some of the laws include taking care of your body internally and externally, valuing it, and knowing the good you can do with your body. The law says that a person's body doesn't belong to them, but to God. Only He can take it away and when He deems it time. If this is so, how does one to decide that they can end their life? The book of Exodus 19:2 reads “Your life is holy, you have to value it, it is a gift from God.” Every person in this world has a mission in life. One doesn't know what it is or when they have fulfilled it. When you take your life how do you know you completed your mission. You are the only person in the whole world who can fulfill the mission assigned to you. How can one just go and throw it away because you decided to end your life. We don't have the right to devalue the gift God gave us. That is why we have to take care of our bodies and do our best not to cause any harm to it. For example one must teach their child how to swim in case god forbid the child is in a situation where swimming is the only way to save his life. Also if one lives in a building with a flat roof he is obligated to put up a fence so no one should fall off. In addition, we also do not hasten the person's death by taking them off respirators, or other machines that are keeping the person
