Would you rather have a harmful, dangerous leader? Or a leader that’s intelligent, practical, and does things to benefit you? Three boys named Ralph, Jack, and Piggy have to come together and figure out solutions on how to survive on the island with no adult supervision. The three of them all have leadership qualities, and all want to be in charge. Ralph was well-rounded, hardly having any flaws and was liked by many. He was athletic, good looking, and tried his best to stay in order throughout the novel. Jack is the head of his choir, demanding and making it clear that he should be leader. They have to make shelter, find food, take care of the rest of the littl’uns and big’uns, etc. Ralph and Piggy find a conch, realizing it could be blown to unite the boys to come together. After some discussion, everyone agrees there should be a leader, in which Ralph was selected. Jack had lost, and Piggy wasn’t ever considered an option between all of the boys. The boys start off having fun with no adults, not worrying about the fact they’re stuck on an island with no communication with the outside world. As the book continues, a fire is made in hopes for a rescue, and Jack becomes obsessed with hunting and becomes violent. Piggy has many smart ideas that Ralph ends up using, and Jack eventually leaves the tribe and creates his own. Everyone except Ralph and Piggy join Jack’s tribe, until Ralph is the only one left. Time goes on as they’re on the island fighting for survival. Ralph comes up with the idea of creating a fire, in hopes of a ship or plane finding them. The rest of the boys get excited, and crazily start heading toward the top of the mountain. The boys are being immature, which upsets Piggy so he yells at them. As he’s frustrated, he reminds the boys that they have no adults with them on the island, and may never get rescued. Even though Piggy got upset with everyone, he was a huge help in making the fire. Wood was collected by the other boys, but they had no way to light the fire. Jack notices that Piggy’s specs can be used to light the fire, being the main source of how they succeeded in having one in the first place. Even though Piggy was annoyed with the boys and wanted everything done orderly, without his specs, a fire wouldn’t have been possible. Ralph, being leader, realizes that the littl’uns and the big’uns, as well as Jack and the choir, aren’t helping as much as he would want them
