Distinction of Fear Fear is a large characteristic that is portrayed in many books and is used differently for different characters and stories. Although fear seems to only be harmful to people, it’s also very helpful in many different ways. Fear can be beneficial because it causes one to be cautious of their surroundings, have a good instinct of what’s good for someone and what’s bad, and it can also prevent one from hurting others. With the good comes the bad; fear also has bad characteristics that can be harmful to other people and the person who holds the fear. Fear can cause one to be paranoid all the time, it can cause them to be obsessive to the point where they’re afraid of everything, and it can also take out the joy of life since one will be afraid to try anything. This shows in the books of Edgar Allen Poe,such as “Tell-Tale Heart”, “Pit and the Pendulum”, and “Masque of Red Death”, in where all his characters are afraid of something; it helps them sometimes, but it’s not always good. Things take unexpected turns that can eventually saves the narrator in the end. Poe wrote “An outstretched arm caught my own as I fell, fainting, into the abyss.” (73) . Although everyone would have expected for the narrator to die but that is because he has something that the other characters didn’t have: hope and perseverance. The narrator used his hope as motivation to keep persevering in order to live. Also, since the narrator didn’t try to outlive death death and beat death at their own “game” that could also be another reason for the narrator's survival.
