Please explain what essential themes stood out for you while reading this week's assignments regarding transition to postsecondary endeavors?
The main themes that stood out to me were the many facets involved in making a transition plan successful. According to “Transitioning to Adulthood,” the three key elements of high quality transition plans are self-determination, natural supports, and quality of life (Westling & Fox, 2000). Transition planning is a life-long activity. Students, families, and professionals need to be working together to plan for a successful adult life. The planning of “transition goals should be an ongoing dynamic process designed to help the student achieve his or her long term goals” (Kellems & Morningstar, 2010). These teams should be made up of multiple individuals who know the student’s strengths and interests and can actually support the students as he or she moves through secondary school. I see that often times, this follow through is a key aspect that schools are missing.
Student participation in extracurricular and social activities is a memorable and important piece of a student’s secondary school life. Students need opportunities outside of the classroom in order to explore interests, skills, …show more content…

However, students with severe disabilities often face uncertain futures, and sadly, disappointing outcomes. The early employment outcomes is disappointing. National Study (NLTS2) indicates that just 2 years post school, only 25% of peoples with intellectual disability, 32% of people with autism, and 32% of people with multiple disabilities were employed (Westling & Fox, 2000). That leaves a significant amount of young adults unemployed, and without hope for a positive career outlook.
