Four days ago, on the island referred to by sailors as “Ship-trap Island,” a man became motivated to play a game. That man was Sanger Rainsford. He had to evade the great hunter and trapper known as General Zaroff. Following the events on the island, Rainsford was the only player left alive. Having only the clothes on his back, food, and a knife, surviving would be incredibly difficult for Mr. Rainsford.
The Most Dangerous Game is a story that discusses the inner capability to humans to perform acts of extreme violence. It observes two different, yet similar characters in General Zaroff and Rainsford. They both have very similar views on hunting, as they both consider the feelings of the prey to be meaningless. However, the stark difference between the two characters is the General Zaroff hunts humans and Rainsford hunts big game. Connell made sure to write this similarity into the story for the sake of foreshadowing.

Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story in where two experienced and intelligent hunters both meet and begin a very dangerous game. Throughout the text we come across a dark suspense which ends in one man’s victory and the defeat of an undefeated man. Rainsford, a hunter who is traveling with a friend through a dangerous island known as “Ship-Trap Island” when he suddenly falls into the sea and must swim to that mysterious island for shelter. There he is welcomed by General Zaroff, a hunter and comes to discover that he has lost the thrill for hunting animals and has now created a new “animal” to hunt, humans. Rainsford is forced to play this dangerous game with the General in order to stay alive.
Rainsford is initially shown to not show any empathy to the wild animals he hunts. Zaroff is no different, with him declaring, “I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans who have the unfortunate luck to arrive on Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff gives no second thought about hunting humans because he finds them to be the perfect sport to hunt, and finds pleasure in hunting them. Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
