Creating the feeling of helplessness in The Most Dangerous Game makes the story suspenseful and tense. When Rainsford falls off the yacht he yells, and is left in the sea. The story says that “the cry was pinched off … blood warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head” (15). The reader knows the chance of rescue is slim when Rainsford begins to fall. Rainsford is in complete desperation when he is treading water. Hoping the boat will turn around, the reader has to come to terms with the fact Rainsford will not be rescued soon.
