Poem Review: Stargirl By Jerry Spinelli

There are many pieces of art that have influenced me such as the painting Starry Night or maybe even a poem. However, a specific type of piece really changed my perspective about how I see the world was a novel called Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. I read this book in 6th grade and it stuck with me ever since. Its about a girl nicknamed Stargirl who was homeschooled and had her first year being a 10th grader at Mica High School. She was treated very differently because of her wacky outfits and her pet rat she always carries around. No one wanted to be friends with her because to them she was like an alien. Leo asked her to change and she did it overnight. She wore clothes just like everybody else at her school and acted and even looked like them. But it made no difference since the students did not change their opinions towards her.That’s when Leo changed his perspective about it and liked Stargirl for who she was and not her trying to be someone else. This novel speaks to me because every now and then I feel like I don't fit in with the rest of my peers. I went through the difficulties like Stargirl and have a story of my own. It speaks to me about being myself .You should love everyone not for the outside but the content of their heart. After I read this novel it made me think about how special every individual is. It gave me the idea about not changing who you truly are for other people, thats what makes us all different. We all have different personalities and perspectives towards everything, and the world would be a boring place having everyone looking and acting the same way as one another.Stargirl had a very strong character.
