After reading "How to Write a Blackwood Article," I must conclude that Poe was both outraged at the state of 19th-century popular fiction and also simply criticizing literature in order to prioritize his own works. A variety of literature ruled the time period, which was littered with tales of heroics and chivalry. Writers like Dickens, Bronte, and Browning were popular.
