The importance of point of view
Considering different points of views within a novel is an important aspect that allows the reader to connect with the character more elaborately as well as helping the reader get a general understanding of a situation. The reader perceives the characters’ experiences and where their aspirations originated. The authors use point of view to show Marji and Amir’s lost of innocence and define their coming of age in their respective novels. In The Kite Runner and Persepolis, both Khaled Hosseini and Marjane Satrapi use first person point of view to illustrate the protagonist’s belief and the reason behind their motives.

In The Kite Runner, Hosseini uses first person point of view to clearly elucidate Amir’s emotion and regret after Hassan’s rape incident and when his abundant feeling of jealousy overtook him that Amir placed his watch and the money under Hassan’s mattress. “I was sorry, but I didn’t cry and I didn’t chase the car. I watched Baba’s car pull away…taking with it the person whose first spoken word had been my name”(Hosseini, 109). This quote illustrates how Amir wanted to apologize to Hassan, but he decided not to and in the end Amir paid the consequences. He saw his friend leave and his self-respect was more important than apologizing to his friend. Hosseini using first person point of view highlights the characters true feelings and emotions that they cannot express out loud. In Persepolis, Satrapi uses first person point of view to display Marji’s real emotion about Anoosh’s death. “Shut up, you! Get out of my life!!! I never want to see you again…. and so I was lost, without any bearings…. what could be worst than that?” (Satrapi, 70-71) by knowing Marji’s point of view we can elaborate on how her relationship with Anoosh was greater than any other relationship she had in the novel. Satrapi’s use of Illustration in Persepolis stands out as it made it more possible for the reader to see and understand the emotions behind the words.
