The Hate You Give, a novel written by Angie Thomas, is an intriguing story about the racism and police brutality in America. Starr is a 16-year-old black girl living in America. Starr attends Williamson Prep, a high-class suburban school, while living in the more dangerous neighborhood of Garden Heights. Following a fight at a party, Starr accepts her childhood best friend Khalil's offer to drive her home. While driving, Khalil was pulled over by a white police officer under suspicious circumstances without Khalil and Starr causing any trouble. As the officer searched Khalil's car, Khalil reached inside and took a hairbrush; the officer then shot Khalil because he thought Khalil was carrying a gun. As Starr is the only whiteness to the murder of Khalil, she then must find a way to balance both her Garden Heights life and Williamson prep life while also fighting for justice towards Khalil, She must do this without disclosing who she is, as doing so could put her …show more content…

In a time where hidden figures would set many of the coloured characters had accepted who they are and didn't try to fight for themselves or their rights, the hate you give introduces the confidence and determination of fighting for who they are, not changing themselves and finding a voice. The hate you give contains many themes useful today such as addressing racism, empathy and youth empowerment, The hate you give is about all these themes confidence, emotion, fighting for justice, such as Starr learning to use her voice and take action to represent the people who are in her situation, the book also shows a range of emotions teaching us to care for others and to never judge someone too quick you never know what they are going
