In his article “Opinion: Proposed police reforms come from all corners, cover broad range”, Ken Armstrong ulitizes rhetoric techniques of ethos and pathos to convey in the necessity of heighted police reform across its regulations, among America. In the passage “The Word Police” by Michiko Kakutani, there is great tone emphasized throughout the article. However, in the fifth paragraph of the article, Kakutani has some certainly strong, overwhelming tone. Kakutani first establishes their opinion with an appeal that there is an impulse to find political correctness, saying that “Certainly no decent person can quarrel with the underlying impulse behind political correctness…”. This general assumption implies that every decent person knows that there is some urge to be politically correct and that anyone who does not know this, is not a decent person. Kakutani then goes on to use pathos to say that these opinions can either make or break someone.

The social problem that the article “When Schooling Meets Policing” is focusing on is the negative issues police officers have on students and their education when police officers are in the school. B.) The big problem that is emphasized in the article is what police officers are doing to young children when the children misbehave. One issue that is emphasized in the article is when at water balloon fight at a high school went down as a senior prank, eight students were arrested and two dozen police officers came to the campus. Students are being arrested for spit balls, temper tantrums, and other childish things that kids are expected to do at that age. In the past the education system would discipline the students with detention or something similar, but now the police officers are actually arresting students for very small things.

Finally, I would like to look at a podcast called Serial. The first season of Serial follows the murder of a high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999. After searching for six weeks, her body is found buried in the local park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan, is arrested and charged with her murder. Deviance and crime is a common characteristic of Canadian society. Deviance is defined as: “recognized violation of cultural norms” (2013, pg.465). While crime is defined as: “recognized violation of society’s formally enacted criminal law” (2013, pg.464). There are some universal similarities about what we as humans consider morally deviant, still, what is regarded as deviant or criminal behavior in Canada may not resonate with other societies. Some behavior “can fall right in between deviant and criminal” (Healy, 2012).

Police officers are the public officials that society has authorized, even obliged, to use force. Corruption is a type of misconduct and offense in which the police break their contract and oath by abusing their power for personal gain or even for departmental gain. Bribery- police officer receives bribes so that they cannot write tickets for people who have gone against the law for example, from prostitutes and gambling, bribery does not only affect the united states but its world spread, examples of other countries with highest percentage of bribery are Pakistan and France. b. Assault on suspects- police officers use excessive force on suspects leading to injuries and at times suspects end up dying in their custody. Some police officers have been charged with murder of suspects in their custody.
