Interviewee: Captain H of Richmond Heights Police Department (Due to the interviewee’s request not to disclose his identity)

Richmond Heights Police Department is an accredited police agency, has been serving metropolitan area since 1912. Currently, the department is operated by 42 officers, who are trained to emphasize the community-policing and collaborate with its residences to keep the community safe. H has been working in law enforcement for over two decades. Before he became a captain of Richmond Heights Police Department, he built up an exceptional career path by working as several different positions. A patrol officer to begin with, moved up to a patrol sergeant, and then worked as a narcotic detective. He also experienced undercover operations for the narcotic unit once. What made him become a police officer seems heavily influenced by some of his relatives who were already working in law enforcement field. Also his willingness to make a difference definitely led him to pursue his career in the law enforcement. Captain’s advice for someone who would like to become an officer: “you have to like what you do”. Captain answered “protecting community and quality of its people’s lives”. In order to meet this priority, “making sure we have enough officers to satisfy the needs”. Captain also provided the specific answer to how they do it. They respond to any call even it is considered to be “small thing”. For example, someone reports a break-in his car and his cellphone has been stolen. Officers would do everything they could to find the stolen cell phone (e.g., collecting fingerprints, tracking down the phone signal, putting the description of phone on stolen/missing item databases, so on). “We have connections with other law enforcement agencies and often work together to solve problems”. The agency’s positive attitude towards solving issues is indeed strong. The scale of issues does not matter to officers of Richmond Height Police Department, and thus every officer is expected to work on the best possible solution even if it is a small
