Popular Press Description of Research The title of a popular press article shows whether or not it is making causal or correlation claims. A causal claim would indicate a relationship between two variables stating that one variable will or is affecting the second variable. The popular press article, “How a Dogs Life Can Make You Happier,” is stating causal claims. This popular press article title is implying that a dog has an impact on its owner’s happiness, whether it be children, parents, or people living by themselves (Hodgson, 2007). The information within the article references studies and other works that support the claims made in the title. The report mentions that dogs can affect physical activity; however; it does not answer the question of how it does this (Hodgson, 2007). Does the dog make you run more or walk more, and if so, how does that affect your health? Does it make you lose more weight or does it make you gain muscle? Also, can it affect a woman’s health during pregnancy? The article claims that people who own dogs will have better overall health as an indirect side effect of owning a dog (Hodgson 2007). However, this can also be explained by a rise in endorphins and other neurochemicals that help to make your physical and mental health better as a side effect of heightened positive emotions. Owning a dog can positively affect your emotions, which leads to heightened physical health as a result of heightened emotional health. The scholarly article was written by several scientists who are specialists in health psychology. The author of the popular press article created the article to be informative as well as persuasive for those who are researching the effect of having a dog and whether or not they should get a dog which is similar to the study. The scholarly article study was intended to be informative to pregnant women who are researching how to better their health. In the popular press article, Hodgson uses informal language in his writing to be more casual with the readers; however, in the study, the author uses formal and descriptive language to show the academic and medical aspect of the article. Both of the articles can benefit many people because they can persuade the readers to buy a dog which could cause a financial gain for the readers. The readers could buy a dog which can decrease the likeliness of later health problems or better health
