1. Homer’s hearty descriptions fill the tale with so much beauty and imagination. His tale becomes real before your eyes, and grows with every place that is visited. Every land is a new adventure drawing the reader in. His words flow with glorious succession in detail that paints a picture in the imagination of the most uninventive minds.
Journal 1 A: Homer has a very unique method of beginning the Odyssey. He starts the book in the action. After we hear about Odysseus's situation in the first passages Homer starts to focus on Odysseus's son, Telemachus. Telemachus is coming the age where he will take over his fathers role as household master that he left unfilled approximately twenty years ago. He is already showing signs of maturity when he ordered the suitors to leave and eventually got them legally ejected.
“You yellow dogs, you thought I’d never make it home from the land of Troy. You took my house to plunder. You dared bid for my wife while I was still alive. Contempt was all you had for the gods who ruled heaven, contempt for what men say of you hereafter. Your last hour has come.
Book 1: The story begins years after the Trojan War with Odysseus who is held captive on the island of Ogygia. A council is held between the gods on Mt. Olympus where Athena pleads for him to be released so that he can return home. Athena also talks to his son about finding Odysseus. Book 2: An assembly is drawn by Telemachus to discuss the suitors residing in his home and stealing his fathers place. A soothsayer appears to warn the suitors that if they do not leave, a massacre will take place.
A Man of Loyalty, Patience, and Determination In the epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer, Odysseus’ heroic deeds are recounted through a narrative that describes his arduous journey from the Trojan War to his homeland of Ithaka. This journey makes Odysseus an epic hero. An epic hero is a brave and noble character who is admired for his achievements. Traits of an epic hero are necessary for the journey Odysseus goes on to reach his homeland.
In society, many people treat others differently based on what they may wear or like. This type of behavior dates back to the early times and can be found in literature such as The Odyssey. Written by Homer, The Odyssey depicts Odysseus' journey home from the Trojan War. In The Odyssey, the poem shows through a social lens how the high-status and joyful people treat the lower class. Respect and kindness were highly valued in ancient Greek culture.
In The Odyssey, the twenty years Odysseus was away from his family, Ithaca, and people took a greater toll on him than anyone else. Even though others had struggled, he had the worst time during the twenty years he was away. Looking at the effects the time had on Odysseus and his father Laertes were very different. Laertes decides to live in poor conditions along with some of his servants.

A hero’s quest is a method of writing which consists of adventure, difficult decisions, victory, and then returning as a changed or transformed version of oneself. One of the important and most used hero quest aspects is enduring darkness. Usually, darkness is a journey, and not one that is a fun enjoyable ride.
Appropriation is defined as being able to shift ideas, visuals, key concepts, characters and settings from one context into another in order to manipulate old notions into new innovated ones, for example the Odyssey by poet, Homer in comparison to Margret Atwood’s the Penelopiad. The Penelopiad as a modernized, fresh view of a vaguely described character, which originated from the Odyssey named, Penelope. Penelope is an obscure or cryptic female character who is interpreted to be a cunning, sly, secretive, intelligent, passionate character that can be compared to Shakespeare’s Juliet. The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
