This source presents the issue of imperialism and how empires lie to conceal that they are plundering and controlling colonies. Empires make promises of educating and liberating but they are rarely fulfilled. Conversely, instead of educating and liberating, imperialist countries take away land and resources through force and assimilation. The author strongly believes and makes it known that imperialism is a negative topic and that it injures economies, cultures, and societies. The definition of imperialism is “a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force”. One of the reasons is that imperialism directly leads to the assimilation, death, and loss of cultures. Imperialist nations force their ideas and beliefs on their colonies resulting in increased mono-culture. The citizens of the colonized countries are forced to give up their way of life and are coerced to conform to their colonizers culture. An example of this is when the indigenous people of canada were being imperialized. They were put into residential schools in efforts to assimilate and change their culture. They were punished when they didn’t conform to the colonizers wants. The indigenous population was also put on reserves further restricting them from their cultural and political beliefs. They were isolated from the rest of the population and couldn’t leave the reserve without permission. They were put on reserves and couldn’t leave so that the colonizers could build a railroad and to control the indigenous people for their own benefit even if it had very negative effects on them. Imperialism also increases mono-culture in the way that imperialist countries want all other cultures to be the same as their own. This is demonstrated when the British forced indigenous children into residential schools. The children were not able to speak their own language or exercise their culture and were forced to speak a foreign laguage but when they did, they were severely punished. Many resources and workers were needed to fuel the production of goods that the world was desiring. Due to imperialist empires not having enough resources and laborers to fuel production, empires decided to make colonies to access more resources and resources that they didn’t have access to. The resources and people of the colonized places were greatly exploited. An example of this is when the major european powers met up at the Berlin meeting to decide who gets which parts of Africa. They did this with no consideration of the nations and people that they were colonizing. In addition, this was evidently shown in triangular trade as well. Triangular trade is when the imperialist countries would go to Africa to get slaves. Afterward, they would go to their colonies to to get resources and to make the slaves cultivate resources and to make them work. Then they would go back to the mother country with their resources. They didn’t see the slaves as people like them but instead as a resource they could use to further their economy. Furthermore, the more slaves that they had, the more money and resources they could have. This shows that imperialism exploits groups of people for benefits for solely the imperialist nation.
