Was Imperialism Good or Bad? Was the age of Imperialism a good or bad thing? Imperialism was a terrible thing because it spread disease, destroyed native interests, and made slavery a very large problem for many years. The spread of disease killed millions of people and helped destroy native cultures. The Europeans exploited the resources of many of the countries in Africa as well as taking over them and forming colonies there. The Europeans also brought slavery to the world which everybody knows is a terrible thing. A large reason why Imperialism was a terrible thing was because the spread of disease. Spreading of these diseases, for example Smallpox, killed millions of people around the world. Smallpox destroyed the native tribes the Aztecs and the Incas. The Europeans spread Smallpox to South America infecting and killing these native tribes. Although the europeans did bring different healthcare advantages to these countries and continents the healthcare wasn’t brought for these areas. The europeans took over the countries they wanted resources from and stole what they wanted. The Berlin Conference, or the “Scramble for Africa,” is when the European countries took over nearly all of the african countries. The african countries were rich with many resources that the Europeans needed. The Europeans needed these resources to run all of the machines that were made during Industrial Revolution. Trading with the countries the europeans wanted resources from would have been much more reasonable. Instead of trading or possibly buying the resources the Europeans captured the countries and stole their resources without giving them anything in return. The countries the Europeans stole from needed these resources too and should have been treated more
