“Freedom Is an Endless Meeting: Democracy in American Social Movements,” by Francesca Polletta focuses mainly on the strategies, methods, and tactics of three groups from the 1960s. The aim of the book was to exemplify the participatory democratic decision making in social movements. The first movement studied by Polletta was the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, which was a network of both black and white youths, many of which became the main organizers of the Mississippi Freedom Struggle. The second movement studied were the Students for a Democratic Society, who tried to emulate Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee’s organizing approach in seven cities in the northern United States. After the group participated in protesting the Vietnam War, the Students for a Democratic Society became a movement with a membership level in the tens of thousands.

Later, the due process clause was used to merge the Bill of Rights to the states. The idea behind due process is that states cannot abolish citizen’s liberties without due process. Liberty comprises of the freedom of speech, press and religion and the right to an attorney if one is suspected of breaking the law. Today, states are unable to seize freedom from individuals. The Supreme Court has used the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment to say that the Bill of Rights encompasses not only the states as well as the federal government.

Furthermore, Gadfly shifts from using “freedoms,” which refers to specific rights like speech or religion, to “freedom” which has no clearly delineated definition in the argument thus adding an element of ambiguity which muddies his conclusion. Most people who lived in New England were Puritans who had their own qualities and features. Puritans increased their liberty from aspects which includes their own religious belief and political model. America finds great strength in liberty. Liberty is found in many ways across this country. For some it comes in the form of expression of opinions, others the right to express inherent tenents of self including sexuality, gender, etc. For me, however, it means doing exactly nothing. Liberty to me operates on all levels.
Now more than ever young people seem to want to voice their concerns when it comes to politics, yet do not take any steps towards making a change. Everyone has a voice but no one wants to follow the rules it takes to make changes in our politics. Now with social media everyone has a voice that must be heard. They believe that their voice alone will make difference. Our school system has failed to properly teach the understanding of how our government system runs.
Negative liberty is freedom from restraint. From this essay, we can make out that Berlin is an admirer of J.S. Mills and his principles. Mills viewed any type of constraint as a violation of a human being’s ‘natural’ rights. To quote Berlin, “Coercion frustrates human desires, but it can be applied to prevent greater evils. Non-interference, on the other hand, is the opposite of coercion, is good, but not the only good.”
Negative liberty is the absence of barriers, condition and constraints and positive liberty is the acting in such a manner to control one’s life and realize their fundamental purpose of life. Negative liberty is attributed to individual entity whereas positive liberty is attributed to collectives. The answers to both the liberties may overlap. The difference between the positive and the negative liberty can be understood in terms of factors that are internal to the person and factors that are external respectively.
