Now more than ever young people seem to want to voice their concerns when it comes to politics, yet do not take any steps towards making a change. Everyone has a voice but no one wants to follow the rules it takes to make changes in our politics. Now with social media everyone has a voice that must be heard. They believe that their voice alone will make difference. Our school system has failed to properly teach the understanding of how our government system runs. Think of civil rights as a sword. The government must enforce the basic right to be free from unequal treatment based on certain protected characteristics, such as race, gender, disability, etc. A civil rights violation occurs in situations where an individual is discriminated against on the basis of a protected characteristic. Most civil rights are established through federal government via federal legislation or case law. Civil liberties can be thought of as a shield, meaning the government can not deny you these basic rights. Civil liberties concern basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed, either explicitly identified in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, or inferred through the years by legislatures or the courts. These basic rights are sometimes forgotten or not fully understood in our generation. Another issue is the lack of knowledge when it comes to our Congress. Congress has all legislative power, meaning that it is the only part of the government that can make new laws or change existing laws. Congress has a great amount of power that is often overlooked. Younger people seem to think that voting does little to change the outcome, when in fact it does. We are not taught correctly in schools of the importance of voting. Our generation thinks our vote does not count towards anything. Voting is one of the most important thing we can do as a citizen but our generation chooses to ignore it. Instead they use social media to get their thoughts out. In reality that does nothing because they do not vote. They want new laws or old one to be changed, and instead of getting together and voting, they just go out and protest their opinions on the matter. We always hear about the constitution in school but if you ask kids of our generation to explain some aspects of the constitution, they could not tell you. The Constitution is the basic set of principles for the United States. We tend to try and bend the rules or ignore the Constitution, but by ignoring the Constitution we are going against everything the founding fathers fought for. We have rules for a reason and if we start breaking our own rules then there will be no more order. If you break one then there is no reason you could not break
