Precise Directions and Positive Narration The importance of precise directions comes from a teachers ability to assign students work with minimum amount of guess work or down time when trying to accomplish a task within the classroom. With clear and precise directions students are able to have full understanding of the task at hand, knowing exactly how to go about accomplishing what has been assigned. When clear directions are lacking in a classroom environment students are often left feeling unclear on exactly what they should be doing, leading to students to become off task due to lack of understanding as their minds begin to wonder due to lack of engagement. This positive narration has two types of effects within the classroom. The students receiving the positive narration are more often inclined to continue the habits of getting right to work, the positive feedback establishes to them that they are doing exactly what should be done and it often seems to make a difference for the students. Second the positive narration acts as a catalyst for the students who may have been lagging or delayed in starting their work, as a simple reminder that there is a task at hand that they should be working on. Strive uses HOM’s () as a way of rewarding students who have shown going the extra mile in class. While being recognized at the end of class can be seen as a reward in itself, students at Strive are able to redeem their HOM points for as the students call it, “swag”. Students are able to get sweatshirts, snacks and other goods by using their HOM points, giving students incentive to be proactive within the classroom. On the other side Strive uses Deltas as their form of consequences. Delta is simply after school detention which is served the same day as receiving the Delta. What separates the Delta from typical detention is that every day is a fresh start for the students, when a student receives a Delta the consequences do not build off each other. A student may receive a Delta for the same issue three days in a row but that fourth day is still a fresh start in which they can work towards redeeming themselves. Before a student ever receives a Delta there are steps in which a teacher of Strive takes. First the student will receive a redirection, reminding them that what they are doing is unacceptable. Second the student will receive a warning that ifsaid behavior is continued it will result in a Delta. Then after two warnings a Delta is issued, this system seems to keep
