In The Legacy, Basil Davidson discusses the legacies of colonialism in Africa and gives an insight on modern Africa and the successes and downfalls that it possesses. Moreover, he states that many of the issues seen in modern day Africa are not new and have their roots in the long years of European colonialism that profoundly shaped and continues to shape the continent. Throughout the documentary, various themes regarding postcolonial Africa are mentioned in depth. A few of the themes that Davidson highlights are modernization, ethnicism, corruption, inequality, dictatorship, and neocolonialism.
From the sixteenth century, Europeans were satisfied with establishing colonies and carrying out trading and missionary activity in foreign continents. However, in the late nineteenth century, countries were determined to take control over large territories in order to expand their empires, a surge known as the new imperialism. Creating colonies acted as a symbol of prestige and dominance over rival nations. The Europeans also hoped to discover riches and valuable natural resources to open regions to commerce. Additionally, they felt it was their duty to civilize the native people by governing them and converting them to Christianity (Spielvogel and McTighe 226).
When the colonists had originally migrated to the New World, they were proud to be British. England treated issues in the Colonies as secondary issues, not as important as ones in England. The colonies had their own form of government for smaller issues. The French and Indian War lasted 9 years.

Imperialism is the practice of powerful nations attempting to acquire control over lesser nations; typically, imperialism revolves around expanding or upholding influence. Historically, in The United States, an imperialistic mindset is perceivable in the popular concept of manifest destiny. Again, in 1823, The United States seeks to exude international influence in publishing The Monroe Doctrine. This document is later used as reasoning to invade territories. Evidently, imperialism was intertwined within the mindsets of many Americans.
The development of slavery and self-government in the Americas from the colonial to the revolutionary period presents two main contradictions which are important not in setting the stage for the American Revolution but also help to establish division between the colonies after the Revolution leading into the Civil War. While one contradiction applies exclusively to the Northern colonies, the other applies to all the colonies and is a key factor leading up to the American Revolution. This shows that Europeans are titling blacks as thieves, prostitutes, and murders. They are pretty much titling them as their downfall to society. They are blaming all of the bad stuff that happens in there everyday life on the Blacks of South Africa. They are not seeing the big picture which is that the white forced themselves into their land and caused them to become poor and are forcing them to scramble for money.
For a movie to be successful, a fight must be had between good and evil. As they were introduced, the Huns are the force of evil in the Disney 's rendition of the Ballad of Mulan and the Chinese people, especially Mulan herself, are the heroes that try to stop theeir enemies and save their country. The differences between both of the parties are shown very clearly, to create a straight cut between good and bad, thereby imposing on the children the importance of choosing the right side, the one that will surely win. As much as Huns are demonized in the cartoon, the Chinese people are made more American that Asian. The decision to make the Chinese more familiar to the people of America and Europe, towards whom the Disney 's movies were majorly directed, was also linked with the notion of post-colonialism.
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad made me think about how people go and “explore” other countries and say the natives are uncivilized just because they are not dress like people in modern countries, speak a dialect, run naked, wear different clothings, and many other things that western society sees like uncivilized. Every country or place has different cultures and the “explores” should not go and educate or make the group of people become “civilized”. For example the book talks about how the black people were treated, the natives the actual one that had more rights to the land, they were enslaved by the European “explorers”. The benefit was for the Europeans and not the actually people that live in Africa. This reminded me of how the Europeans
The racial prejudice by such scholars and the negative portrayal found their way to the public and thus lead to even more negative views. In the 17th century, an argument emerged, characterizing Africa as a place of famine, war, disease and poverty. This argument was further used by anti-abolitionists to make slavery in foreign countries a positive escape. Colonialism in Africa went even further to promote the negative portrayal of Africa and the colonial powers convinced themselves that they were redeeming “the land of fantastical beats and cannibals, slaves and backward races.”

To support the definition and meaning of theory, I will use theoretical positions to discuss and how they relate to the theory.
Colonialism is an important topic in the novel, Things Fall Apart that causes societies to flourish, but it also causes societies to fall. Ibo society is a society that functions best by itself with no competition from other societies. Ibo society is unstable as even small-scale colonialism can cause Ibo society to fail. However, the true reason for the failure of Ibo society is colonialism. Achebe portrays the use of colonialism as having harmful effects on Ibo culture and community.
Discourse on colonialism generally results in the different opinions of the colonizer and the colonized. The upshot of such discourse shows that colonialism has divergent interpretations. For the colonizer, it is ‘a civilizing mission’; to the colonized, it is exploitation. Such concept is better understood when both the views are studied with an objective approach. Things Fall Apart is a perfect novel to study colonialism as it deals with the perspectives of the colonizer and the colonized.
Lenin (1917) broadly defines imperialism as the highest form of capitalism. Lenin explains that imperialism was an effort by the "advanced" countries to exert their dominance in the world, and own and control its economic resources and potential. Capitalism made it unviable for the less developed countries to follow the route of the "advanced" countries, as this would lead to competition. The monopoly capitalist nations, therefore, did not have any interest in development. Rather, their investment went into the exploitation of raw materials for their industries.
