“With great responsibility comes great power.” Power can be abused if it is used by the wrong person. This relates to the book, “Flawed,” and the article, “Power.” Cecilia Ahern’s use of power and corruption throughout the book, “Flawed,” demonstrates the idea that people can use their power against others for personal gain in a dystopian world. In the modern world, this is shown through people being used and mentally hurt by others. The article “Power,” by Richard Schmitt, conveys the idea of power as an act of control over others with less power and being able to use your own personal power to manipulate. Celestine was seen as different things to different people. A hero, a leader for the Flawed, a villain, a poster girl, and the most flawed person in history. Celestine learned the rules of being Flawed but never fully understood why they had to be followed. Such as three Flawed people cannot stand next to each other, Celestine had “never stood between two Flawed before” and now she knows why, “...it gives [them] strength...They don’t want [them] to feel safe. They don’t want [them] to have the power” (Ahern 308). Celestine realized that Flawed people are overlooked. People who are not Flawed will do anything to make sure to keep it that way. They will make sure all Flawed people follow the tiniest rules or take it to the most extreme measures if not followed. For example, Judge Crevan, one of the antagonists in “Flawed.” When Celestine was almost done with her branding, he came in to have one last time to prove his power against her. He demanded that Celestine have her spine branded with no anesthetic “...because [they] have never seen someone Flawed to their very back bone like this lady. Brand. Her. Spine” (Ahern125). Such as power to manipulate, to dominate, to get what one wants, etc. Sometimes power can be this type of weight you carry on your shoulders. It takes over your mind, body, and soul. It changes the way you see, feel, and hear. It turns you into someone you are not. Power is able to “shape situations and persons so that they will never think to resist” (Schmitt 5). Power could form situations into an argument or a manipulation. People ponder upon the thought of how power could take over them and their lives? The modern world usage of power relates to the dystopian world usage of power because how people are taught to not resist. It is interesting how “...power to manipulate so that resistance does not arise is more impressive than the power to overcome resistance” (Schmitt 5). There are many ways people can be brainwashed into thinking they do not have a say in what they do with their lives or how they live. Power changes your whole life because your life is lived by you and your brain. If your brain is stuck thinking that you have no power, then you will live thinking that is true. You will live thinking you cannot be
