Pre K Observation

My major is Early Childhood Education and I am looking forward to teaching pre-k. For my first clinical I was sent to Hilldale Elementary School, located in Putnam City. I was paired with Yolanda Castellanos and her pre-k class. She has a class with about 24 students in it. Almost 3 of the students won’t be at school in a given week. About 70 percent of the students in her classroom are Hispanic. Honestly, the day that stood out the most was my first day. I went to the cafeteria to meet the TA Sofia. She didn’t seem well, but she decided to push through the day. Eager to start the day off, I helped her gather the students who were eating breakfast. Afterwards we took the children to class. Right on time Mrs. Castellanos appears in her class room, quickly commanding them to put their materials up. The teacher and her TA talked to the side for a second, then she told me that the TA would be going home. Soon after that, the office called and asked if she would need a substitute to help out. My mentor teacher left for lunch and the Liberian started to read to the children. My mentor teacher told me that the Liberian was supposed to read to the children for about 15-20 mins. For some reason the kids were super wound up after lunch and they would pay attention or listen to the Liberian read. Apparently, the Liberian didn’t like that because she only read one story and told me that she was leaving. I tried my hardest to keep the class orderly, but it slowly turned into chaos. I started sending the girls to the restroom but the boys kept asking to go, and I felt really bad that I couldn’t send them. I played the movie, but as you could probably guess none of the kids wanted to watch. Louder and louder the class started to get and I wasn’t prepared. I told them to stop or to quiet down but nothing really worked. A teacher from another classroom nearby had to come help
