Diego Adame-Lopez Jasmin Garcia English 12 Honors 03 March 2023 The Future is in your Hands “ Your future hasn't been written yet. No one has. Your future is whatever you make it.” (Dr. Emmett Brown)
In the play The Tragedy of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare a character Macbeth was told he was going to be king and he did everything in his power to make it happen. Macbeth tries to control the future by listening to lady macbeth and takes matters into his own hands to become king he did unspeakable things to make sure his prophecy came true. Macbeth allowed Lady Macbeth to convince him to not wait around to be king and take action to make certain that he will become king. Three witches told Macbeth that he would soon become king and when lady Macbeth heard she knew she would become queen so she became adamant on it happening she couldn't wait for the prophecy so she fed Macbeth terrible ideas for the prophecy to come true sooner than
While the witches are making their predictions about both Macbeth and Banquo, the prophecies made foreshadow many upcoming events about to occur. I do not personally believe that directly telling that something will happen, such as Macbeth becoming king, is foreshadowing, however, that combined with the predictions made about Banquo do create foreshadowing. While it is said that Macbeth will become king, it is also said that Banquo's children will become kings, and these two events contradict each other. Since it is established that Macbeth is a ruthless soldier on the battlefield, it can be assumed that he will fight for what he wants, thus foreshadowing that Macbeth may in fact kill Banquo in order to prevent Banquo's children from gaining
1Far from the streets of Scotland, in a deserted heath among the unknown, three inhuman sorcerers predicted the future that was unforeseen to the normal man. “Where shall we meet again, in thunder, lightning or rain?” cackled one of the supernatural creatures. After speaking about their next meeting and encounter with Macbeth, these wicked witches went their separate ways and vanished, waiting for what riveting occurrences would soon take place. Meanwhile, at Dunisnane Castle, the Scottish King hears the delightful news that Macbeth has brought home yet another triumphant victory.
For me, in Shakespeare's Macbeth foreshadowing is labeled as fate and fate plays a large role. Not only do the “witches” use it to wreak havoc among the nobility in Scotland at the time, but many characters throughout the play try to change their individual fate. Macbeth does it, and so does Lady Macbeth. Then later in the play, even Malcolm, Macduff, and the other revolutionaries try to alter fate. Throughout the play of Macbeth, Shakespeare chooses to use animals to portray foreshadowing, to develop character and to get a wide variety of emotions from the audience.
Ambition and self-fulfilling prophecies two seemingly unrelated things that are actually intertwined with one another. Ambition is the thing that drives many people to do the things they love. Self-fulfilling prophecies are a direct result of ambition by the person subconsciously doing things to get their foreseen future. These things help the advancement of people’s lives. It is part of life to want to succeed and have dreams be fulfilled.
“If chance will have me king, why chance may crown me, without my stir” (Shakespeare 144). Macbeth, a loyal subject to his king has an encounter that will change his fate with an ultimate effect on his free will. They claim three predictions, Macbeth will be the Thane of Cawdor and later crowned King but Macbeths lineage will not maintain the throne. After this supernatural confrontation, Macbeth questions this loyalty which will ultimately lead to his new fate carried out (LitCharts 1). Fully capable to act upon his own free will, Macbeth instead is driven by fate to his destruction which gives further insight of his character advancement.
In the Jacobean period, England heavily believed in the supernatural being in the real world; they especially trusted in witches and witchcraft as morbid fascination. Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, uses supernatural elements that are a necessity to the plot. The supernatural shows itself to the audience in numerous forms such as through the witches prophecies, a floating dagger, and the ghost of Banquo. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the apparitions and Weird Sisters prophecies motivate Macbeth’s actions and pushes the plot forward. These entities drove Macbeth to murder, paranoia, and a false sense of security.
Shakespeare's Macbeth Act 1 Scene 3 should be staged in the forest with dimmed lights, dramatic music, and dated wardrobe. The play begins when the the witches told Macbeth that he was going to be king of Scotland. Three witches approached him and Banquo telling their fates. For Macbeth, he will be Thane of Cawdor then the king of Scotland. Banquo’s prophecies was stated that his descendants will be future kings.
Fate is a prediction of someone’s life and the internal and external forces playing a role in that person’s destiny. In Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth”, Macbeth is a victim of his prescribed destiny. Three witches, the people closest to Macbeth, and most importantly, his own ego and actions, determine his prescribed destiny. Three witches appear to Macbeth after King Duncan finds out he is betrayed by the Thane of Cawdor.
From the play, the witches foretold the future to Macbeth and Banquo where Macbeth “shalt be king hereafter!” (1.3.50) and Banquo “shalt get kings,” (1. 3. 67) for offspring but not Macbeth. Similarly, from the drama, a grandma fortune-teller delivered a prophecy to the warrior who was turned into a goblin.
To mention, Banquo is faced with a similar prophecy like Macbeth. When the witches approached the pair, they said to Banquo “Thou hast get Kings, though thou be none. So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo! Banquo and Macbeth, all hail” (I.3.36) Even though, it is said that Banquo’s descendants will become King while Macbeth will become King in his lifetime.
The captain assumes that he would be dead in the battlefield. “And fortune, on his damned quarrel smiling, showed like a rebel’s whore, but all’s too weak: For brave Macbeth well he deserves that name. Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody executions”(I.II.8-12). The captain says that Macbeth should have died in the battle, but Macbeth escaped his own death. Once he hears that the witches have predicted that he will become the Thane of Cawdor, which came true, Macbeth believess their second prediction that he is going to become the king.
Macbeth fate started of when he met the witches at the battle field after winning the battle against Macdonwald. The three witches predicted that he will become the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth believes their prediction “ If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me Wthout my stir”
Fate Versus Free Will In Macbeth Fate versus free will is a theme well known throughout literature and in life as well. Is life controlled by fate, or are people’s lives dependent on the choices they make? In Macbeth, Shakespeare emphasizes the idea of fate vs. freewill, indicating that both elements play a role in the lives of individuals, as well as society as a whole. The main character, Macbeth’s, life is a combination of fate and his conscious decisions. The witches in Macbeth can control the fates of many, but only to a point.
