Preschools today are plagued with over teaching and focusing on test scores more than the child’s learning in the class. In our school, we are combining some of Plato’s values with our own in attempt to create a better preschool for the toddlers. The four policies by which we will run our school have their basis in Plato’s beliefs and writings but with a modern twist to make them more realistic in today's society. The first of the four policies is education for all. Plato clearly viewed that everyone should be educated in his writings of The Republic. In his ideal utopian city, he decided that everyone should be educated to determine how they can best benefit the city. In 376e Plato talks about needing musical training as well as physical training and we will emphasise the same belief in our school. In a recent article by Erika Christakis, one of the problems that plagues preschools are test heavy curriculums involving vocab and specific testing. In the article it mentions how the teachers are trying to teach vocab and then show the results on a test or quiz. We don’t believe this is the best way to teach the children. Our goal is to teach in the real world. Ideally we will have group activities, not tests, that the children will participate in to determine how well they are progressing. With the goal of learning and developing still in mind, we will have the teachers take the children on field trips to teach them with experience. Staying in the classroom wouldn’t be the best learning environment for them. We will promote questions in a small classroom environment to further their social skills. We would like to prevent scaring the children but we don’t want children to be confused of the media they are viewing. Our values differ from Plato’s in this subject because he wanted to censor the children from learning about the gods because he thought the children would imitate some of the same actions the gods ensued. This is shown in 378c when Plato mentions how stories with gods opposing each other and fighting shouldn’t be allowed. In our modern society we see it as nearly impossible to censor topics from the children. Our fourth policy would be to talk to the children through these topics before they are exposed to them in order to prevent confusion. We will address this growing problem in the media by slowly introducing them to violence and other topics that they might happen to see on TV or other forms of
