The Shame of The Nation
“Separate and unequal didn’t work 100 years ago. It will not work today,” quote by Jonathan Kozol. 12 years ago, Kozol conducted research on segregated schools named after leaders, such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. Today, segregation has evolved over the years and has not once left the minds of the people.
Educational Landscape There are many factors that can affect an educational landscape. Many students face hardships when getting an education, test-taking anxiety, and how an impact can affect a student.
Better or Worse?
Kozol education landscape has not changed in the past 12 years, however, it feels like it got worse. Students of color face many hardships back then and still to this day. Two of the most important is, limited resources and support from educational officials. Limited resources, focuses on how some disadvantaged students are not able to participate in proper head start programs. According to Kozol,” Baby Ivies, since the age of two have been given seven years of education by this point, nearly twice as many as the children who have been denied these opportunities.” (Kozol, 2005) This goes to show that disadvantaged students are often denied or cannot afford early head start programs. Los Angeles Times reporter states, “four-year-old tapped his head with his pencil and stared blankly at the test booklet before him. This boy did not yet know how to read.” (Kozol, 2005) By giving a four-year-old a test it creates test anxiety from an early age. The child will grow to hate testing and eventually school. When it comes times for testing at an early age some are clueless, cannot hold a pencil, and don’t know the basics of test taking. By improving these areas, and taking out testing at such a young age will help students be more engaged in school. Testing should start during a higher elementary
