For my leadership project, I created a presentation for two second grade classes at Iona Elementary School. The purpose of the presentations was to inspire and motivate these young students to develop hobbies throughout their lives. The inspiration for this project came from knowledge of cut funding in elementary schools and the hope that hobbies in music or athletics could provide students with an outlet to find happiness and deal with stress. In order to accomplish this I invited three other skilled individuals to join me. They were Marley (a recent graduate in graphic design), Justin (an athlete), and Staci (a musician). Together we put together a ninety minute program that that taught students about art, music, and other activities. This was all centered on the idea that hobbies can be a source of happiness in our lives. Overall, the presentation was the culmination of about 18 hours of preparation between the four of us (this time included personal lesson preparation, the actual presentation, and various other administrative duties). I decided to focus on a smaller, more intimate group because I felt it was the best way to connect with our audience. I believe that the results of the project were extraordinary. We were able to outperform my initial goal to teach 32 students. The project was extremely well received by both the teachers and students. Numerous teachers expressed interest in the program. Students found the project memorable and wrote us several letters in the following weeks. These reactions show that the presentation was successful in both the eyes of the teachers and the students.
