The term “enemy of the people” has been used for centuries and was first used during Roman times, but since then it has snowballed into a fearful proclamation used against a nation’s own citizens. Hitler and Germany, Lenin and Russia, Kim Il-sung and North Korea, and Hussein and Iraq are all examples of how quickly power can be taken into the hands of dictators who would ultimately transform the free press into a government machine that spews endless propaganda to its people. “Enemy of the people” is permanently tattooed on the citizens who oppose these regimes and they are painted as rebels who would harm and lie to the people of the country. Recently, President Trump has come under fire for stating on multiple occasions, dating back to his election season, that the American free press is “the enemy of the American people” and once again uses the centuries old term to attempt to taint those that oppose him. America was waiting to see how professional and poised President Trump would be at his press conference, but the occasion was anything but. When President Trump was not talking about his admiration for himself, he was accusing the press of being disgraceful and producing fake news.
