The inmates were treated so poorly that they felt they needed to retaliate against the guards. Working in a prison is a possible career choice for me, this book taught me issues that can arise while working in a prison. As a correctional officer, I want to be a productive and effective, I will be friendly with the inmates but not become friends. Treating them with respect will often times result in them giving respect back, which will make them trust and respect your authority. I will be attentive of my surroundings and inmate interactions.
The “guard mentality” can create negative traits that lead to the inhumane treatment and abuse of prisoners. On the other hand, prisoners that act out in violence and brutality can be traced back to the being confined in a cell. The history of prison and incarceration in the United States have dramatically increased as well as the cost of keeping an inmate incarcerated. Every year, more and more prisons get overcrowded with mostly black and brown people with minor offenses. One of the main prisons is San Quentin State Prison which is the oldest and first prison ever opened in California. The prison first opened 166 years ago, on July 1852, at the northside of San Francisco Bay. It is able to hold 3,802 inmates.
“Prison State” Paper Charles McDuffie, was the prisoner who had the greatest effect on me from the video. The reason why Charles, had the greatest effect on me is because my biological father also suffered with a drug addiction and was a repeat visitor of the prison system. I could see my father’s life while watching Charles’ story and hear him speak about his issues. It made me see hope in Charles and how people can change and deserve another chance at life. My father recently was released from prison and is on parole, going to meetings and trying his hardest to stay on right path.
Stanford Prison Experiment Philip Zimbardo questioned, “What happens when you put good people in an evil place? Does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph?” (Zimbardo, 1971) In 1971 a psychologist named Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment on the effects prison has on young males with the help of his colleague Stanley Milgram. They wanted to find out if the reports of brutality from guards was due to the way guards treated prisoners or the prison environment.
The prison industrial complex is a perpetuation of slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery, was ratified in 1865, creating a loophole which has allowed slavery to continue within the U.S. prison system. The 13th Amendment was modified to state that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Prison abolition focuses on a restorative and transformative type of justice, where prisons are not the default. As it is, a thorough understanding and critique of the prison system is essential to finding solutions to combat systemic oppression.
The term "Prison Industrial Complex" (PIC) is used to express the rapid expansion of the United States inmate population. The prison industrial complex (PIC) is an expression used to describe the connection between the interests of government and industry that use surveillance, policing, and imprisonment the resolution to economic, social and political problems. The P.I.C helps to maintain the authority of people who get their power through racial, economic, social and other privileges. Power is collected and maintained through the PIC in many ways, including creating mass media images that reinforce the stereotypes associated with people of color, less fortunate people, homosexual people, immigrants, youth, elderly and other oppressed communities. These stereotypes imply that those who are associated with these groups of society are criminals, corrupt, delinquent, deviant, etc.
Why the prison system is flawed The american prison system is flawed and should be changed because it is very expensive to keep it running the way it is, the prison system is helping gangs grow and it can be fixed it is possible. I believe that it needs to change so that cities will have more tax money to fix other things and the people who don't deserve to get released won't be. The prison system is very expensive for taxpayers because they have to pay to employ the officers, they have to pay for the building, the tools, the food for them to eat, there clothing and bedding.

Private Prisons Many people in America have no idea that there are different types of prison systems. The two different types of prisons include state-ran and private. State-ran prisons are prisons owned and operated by the local, state, or federal government; however, private prisons are prisons in which individuals are incarcerated by a third-party organization that is under contract with a government agency. Private prisons are funded by the government and have the unique ability to do whatever they want.

I believe that prisons represent society’s values and beliefs. Those who have been prosecuted failed to comply with the law which is a representation of what society deems unacceptable. Prisons represent the type of people that exist in our society and may display a pattern of similar offenders. Just like society where we have to abide by the laws, those in prison have to abide by the rules and regulations of the prison. Another way in which prisons represent society is that even though everyone has rights we are all restricted in one way or another.
