Throughout the history of the world men and women have struggled with the decision of whether or not to abort or keep an unwanted or unplanned fetus. An abortion, at its core, seems to be just ridding a woman of an unwanted or unplanned burdened, but this issue is so much more than a simple medical operation; it has lasting consequences on not only the fetus but the woman and family forced into the situation. The ultimate decision on whether or not to have an abortion will be influenced by many different factors: religion, social standards and acceptance, and the morals of the man and woman in question. Abortions can physically harm a woman’s body, although the chances of this are very low, but abortions can also damage a woman’s psychological wellbeing (Kaczor 10). Both sides of this issue, Pro-Life and Pro-Choice, can argue about how an abortion impacts a woman psychologically and emotionally. Many women will deeply regret the decision to have an abortion, but there may also be psychological effects stemming from choosing not to abort (Kaczor 10). Pro-Choice supporters will point out that some women do not report any adverse effects after an abortion, and some even report, “feeling freed and exhilarated” (Kaczor 10). Pro-Life supporters will bring up that many women have reported negative experiences after abortions, and even have founded support groups to help women cope with the trauma of an abortion (Kaczor 10). Clearly abortions can impact different women in different ways, but even individuals who support legal abortions admit that women can suffer severe damage to their psychological and mental health following an abortion (Kaczor 10).
