You normally don’t find a fox living on the 72nd floor of an unfinished building. But in London, that's exactly what happened. As the author of “Why Wild Animals Are Moving Into Cities, And What To Do About It” states that animals are going to new lengths to live in human territory. But why? URBANIZATION. (Urbanization is the growth of cities and urban areas.) As urban areas (An area with a density of human buildings and large population like a city or suburb) grow habitats shrink forcing animals into human territories. The foxes in London and coyotes in the U.S. are magnificent examples. Most of the coyotes in the U.S. are living in urban areas and survive off of small rodents in the cities. Humans keep building and producing without slowing down or much less stopping. Humans tear through habitats without a second thought. As more people come into the world more people are expected to come to urban areas and already 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in urban areas by 2050. That is a big leap from now because now only 54% of the world’s population lives in urban areas. All the urban areas and cities growing are causing animals to move into human communities. Usually when they do humans end up killing the animals. Something that could be good or bad is that home ownership has increased by 17% between 1999 and 2005. That shows that home ownership is increasing and has probably increased even more by now. This could mean that people are moving away from urban areas to live in a rural area. This could indicate that people are moving into urban areas for the convenience of the city.

When Will It End?

The problems of urbanization seem endless. Urban growth is sadly inevitable (unavoidable) but there are ways to keep the animals that are affected safe. Groups all over the world are helping to make sure animals that are affected by urban growth are not injured. A number of people have worked with the people in their neighborhood to connect small pieces of habitat to help animals. Also when a business buys an area of land a group usually comes in and helps the animals that live there relocate. As you can see every little bit of help can make a difference. So what will you do with your future?
