Industrialization revolutionized the world economy in the United States in the 1800’s. It was the growth of the industry that created problems. A small group of people held the nation’s wealth and the rest of the nation fell into poverty. Workers worked long hours, they worked in dangerous conditions, they were paid poorly, and didn’t know what their future held for them. The skilled workers and peasants were in search of jobs every day. The big corporations had become close allies with the government and while the big corporations grew in the United States, the economy plummeted. It was a nationwide strike of thousands of railroad workers and labor allies, who protested the growing power of railroad corporations and the steep wage cuts.
