What are some characteristics that you would use to describe a good man? Few that I would use are: patient, wise, honest, God-fearing, humble, and prayerful. Throughout the novella Anthem the society disregards citizens having thoughts of their own. Prometheus, who has always been a free thinker, has always felt out of place in this society. As the novel progresses Prometheus comes to appreciate his trait of independent thinking. At the ending of the novella Prometheus comes to understand that what society sees as unethical is actually a valuable trait to have. Prometheus writes that he finally recognizes ‘why the best in me has been my sins and my transgressions; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins” in the concluding chapter of Anthem (Rand, 98).
In the words of Richelle E. Goodrich, “Vengeance is a monster of appetite, forever bloodthirsty and never filled.” Arthur Miller recognized this sinful inclination as it commonly circulated during the anti-communist, “Red Scare.” He corresponds this period to the 1692, Salem Witch Trials, another frightening occasion where wicked accusations loomed over civilians. At least 200 people were thought to practice witchcraft and around 20 were executed on account of this. Without a doubt, both incidents prove how quick someone can act upon bitter motives, specifically by spreading unscrupulous lies for the sake of getting even.
The Greek’s viewed man’s character as flawed. The sum of a man’s human traits is defined as human nature. Human nature is the reason for the evils and the flaws of this mortal life. The description of a hero can be different among many people. Some may say a hero has to be courageous, smart, and strong, but they don’t talk about the flaws a hero may possess. Odysseus portrays very obvious flaws in the epic The Odyssey. When I look more into Odysseus’ flaws as a character, I do not see Odysseus as admirable. When reading The Odyssey, the many obstacles that Odysseus faces and defeats shows him to be courageous and clever.
Aquila, the pet eagle of Zeus, showed the gentler side of his nature when he carefully carried up Ganymede to Mount Olympus to be cupbearer to his master. However, when considering the myth surrounding Prometheus, the ferocious, darker side of Aquila is very evident. Prometheus was one of the last Titan gods who became an advisor to Zeus. He was protective of humankind and, seeing how they suffered because they had no fire, he stole a ray from the Sun which he smuggled down to earth in a hollow stem. Zeus did not believe that man was worthy of such a gift, and was furious that Prometheus had acted without his permission.
CAUCASIAN MOUNTAINS- On January 6th, the popular Titan Prometheus was freed once and for all. After angering Zeus and stealing his beloved flower of fire, Prometheus was sentenced to 200 years of being chained to the Caucasian mountains. “My intentions were not meant to be harmful at all, I only tried to save the men on earth by giving them a chance to protect themselves.” Prometheus finally broke his long overdue silence and spoke in his defence.
