The argument on gun control is one that reaches deep into the heart of our nation. Two sides of the American people and in fact two sides of the world’s people are split on the issue of firearms. One side calls for the purpose of the complete abolishment of these dangerous machines while the other side argues that gun ownership is a personal freedom and in a sense a for the purpose of expression. While both sides remain at opposite ends of the spectrum there are those who represent the middle man and express concerns for the purpose of the extremist views of those poles. In 1993, the United States legislature passed the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act. This act imposed a five day waiting period and a background check on those who purchase a handgun from a retail dealer. Immediately, the Brady Law brought with reference to a fifty percent decrease in the use of firearms in serious crimes after the twenty year rise. Along with this ban, the Federal Assault Weapons Act banned the sale of nineteen assault weapons and over two dozen copy-cat models. After the ban was implemented in 1994 the use of assault rifles in violent crimes significantly decreased from six percent of all gun crimes to well under three percent. Many advocates for the purpose of gun deregulation, state that gun control policies infringe on the second amendment or “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” In spite of that fact supports of gun control claim that their opponents deliberately overlook the preamble to that section. Many people have been influenced by means of the incidents, tragedies and their own perspectives. While over four million Americans argue that the right to bear arms is not only a constitution right but also a natural right to defend oneself. While on the opposite side of the spectrum gun control advocates state that a gun’s only purpose is to kill or wound. Along with this perspective gun control advocates show evidence that banning of certain firearms decreases the overall gun crime rate; in spite of that fact, the opposite appears to be true for the purpose of the universal ban of firearms in European countries that seem to only drive violent crimes up. Now the central tendency of the majority of Americans seems to be one that has limited gun-control but is coupled with proper training and licensing. This neutral side argues that gun crime rate can only decrease with the increased responsibility of gun wielding American citizens. In conclusion, the controversial topic on gun control laws is one that has spread throughout the history of the United States and is and will continue to be a topic that sparks discussion not only among the polarities of the two sides but also among the average American
