The rate at which firearms are manufactured has increased by more than 250% over the last three decades (DOJ; Exhibit 1a.). With the total number of incidents related to gun violence topped off at over 41,000 in
2015 alone (Gun Violence Archive), gun control remains a heavily advocated but sensitive topic within the United States. The right to bear arms is protected under the Second
Amendment of the United States Constitution which reads, "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"(Second Amendment). It was formed in an effort to build safer communities and end gun violence within America. Everytown firmly believes that they can save lives by encouraging the reform of gun control policy while still respecting the rights granted by the Second Amendment. So far they have had numerous legislative successes and are getting closer to their goals every day. Some of the measures they wish to implement are mandated background checks for gun ownership and stronger weapons trafficking laws. If implemented these would help keep guns out of the hands of criminals and other dangerous entities with backgrounds such as domestic violence. They also would like the ability to educate parents about safe storage and handling of firearms to prevent minors from accessing them. A possible solution would be that firearms are regulated in a similar fashion to the way we regulate automobiles. This proposed solution would meet the shared goal of both advocacy groups, as well as having the benefit of neither giving up anything for the compromise other than a little inconvenience once or twice a year. First off, an agency would need to be established to help maintain standards and regulations as well as help implement legislation for any violations of policy just as the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
